How old are you?
Not telling you... What's your mum like?? :)
How long have you been dj’ing?
I started dj’ing in 1984 after listening to dj/producer Greg Wilson on Mike Shafts Piccadilly Radio show in the early 80's. Mike used to have a funk, jazz funk and soul show, (which was the main clubbing dance music of the time), every Sunday on Piccadilly (now Key 103) and Greg Wilson used to do guest mixes on the show. Greg was one of the early pioneers of mixing in the UK and introduced early electro and hip hop to this country [visit http://www.electrofunkroots.co.uk for more info]. I was simply blown away by what he was doing with the music, the way he would blend tracks together to make completely new ones and just the way he made the music flow... Awesome, just awesome!.
I started by doing my own edits of tracks with a couple of tape decks, then my mum bought me a reel to reel tape recorder and I got into splicing tape edits, the way Greg Wilson did. I then then saved every penny I had and bought myself a pair of Technics sl12000 mk2 and started mixing vinyl. I then got my first opportunity to dj when, unknowingly, told the dj's girlfriend in a club that the dj was rubbish and that he should try mixing... She told him and he said, "you think you can do better, try it". So I did... Made a total balls up of it but shown I was was willing and given a job.
The rest is history.
2010 has been a hectic year for the club and DJs, what has been your favorite night and why
Hmmm, that’s a hard one, there have been so many...
The Bitch Halloween party was awesome, simply because everyone made an effort to get dressed in fancy dress... That’s what made it!
I think the first Venus Classics was awesome, packed to the rafter's with a really up for it crowd (see the famous crowd shot where everyone has there hands in the air, that was that night!)
Nye was awesome as well, great up for it crowd that just wanted to party.
If you could give 1 thing that makes you different from any other DJ what would it be?
I don’t know about “from any other dj” but... accuracy in mixing.
You tell me??
What does 2011 have in store for you?
I think 2011 is going to be a fantastic year at the club new club with big brands coming in, and more importantly, getting Venus, as a brand, back pumping and showing people why we’ve been great for the past 11 years.
I am really proud to of been part of the Venus team since 2001 and think we are going to go on from strength to strength for many many more years to come.
I am also looking to get back into recording and producing some new tracks with my son jay, and looking to start him off in his dj career. Hopefully were gonna do something BIG!
We are VENUS!!
